The Stats
Amazon’s Kindle products sold more than 4 million in December 2011 alone, making it one of the fast-selling electronic devices to date. Other ereaders like the Nook displayed an increase in sales too.
How did they get so popular?
The interest in ebooks and ebook readers has been climbing steadily over the last few years. There is a lot to be said for it. Many users say that being able to hold several books in one portable device is one of the reasons they chose to have an ereader.
I first got an ebook reader when I was away for a 3 week work trip. As I did not wish to carry bulk – the ebook seemed like a good enough solution. Initially, I missed the feel of a soft-back book, but I surprised myself at how little I missed it after a few chapters.
Also, the fact that it slipped into any small bag easily made was great. I could read a pdf document at work and them very quickly switch back to my novel.
2011 was year that really saw the sales of ebooks and ebook readers take off on a flight. With the development of clever, android type ereaders like the Kindle in Color and the Nook in Color, carrying all the features of a regular ipad, except with a much lower price tag, it gives readers many sought after functions like the music and video players, besides the use of an ebook.
In fact, the low prices of the Kindle in Color (the Kindle Tablet) is believed to be priced below its manufacturing cost for a reason. Amazon knows that once a person acquires a Kindle ereader or Kindle Fire, it will lead to further sales on their ebooks and their growing video library.
Analysts believe that the trend towards ebooks and e-book readers will continue to grow. While it is true that physical, published books will continue to have their place in our world, the world of cheaper wireless ebooks is fast beginning to be bookmarked in our reading world.
